The argument from authority in workplace relationships

The categories of arguments reveal the balance or imbalance of an exchange. In workplace relationships, the argument from authority reminds the other person of his/her subordinate position. However, this argument can be used to belittle a subordinate or peer (i.e. to damage their self-esteem).
The subordinate or peer acts within a framework that imposes limits but also protects them. The superior is placed in the same situation. A common ground, that of the structure, brings them together in the service of a shared goal. Each one has his/her own tools, each one has his/her own mission, but they are united by the same goal.
In cases of manipulation, accusatory reversal aims to make the other person guilty of what the accuser is doing. Words will be twisted, exaggerated, placed in a linguistic construction in which the original meaning will be muddled in order to cause discomfort. Most people retain the negative emotion and are unable to separate the pearl from the mud. This negative emotion activates the lever of fear. The manipulator using the argument of authority can therefore insinuate and ensure the loyalty of followers who react to fear, ambition and jealousy, the latter two being fear in disguise.
The factual argument explains (but does not justify!) what is, through a rational, even scientific approach. It is based on reality, not on projection. Raw, it is strong and plain. It demonstrates, just like the argument from experience. It is not based on seduction, but on what is true in a given and specific context. It does not aim to elicit emotion but invites further reflection on the basis of action in the service of a shared goal.
Many confuse what is raw with personal aggression. What is raw and rational is simple and solid. It is from this cornerstone (angle of view) that a solid edifice can be built. No sound edifice, no sound structure, can be built on the sinuosity of insinuation, like corrosive water that seeps everywhere to undermine the foundations.
Moving forward together means relying on what is clear, solid and verifiable. It means going beyond jealousy and the safety of the inner circle to return to a shared goal.
In the restored crypt of an old cathedral, I was able to experience this simple truth: after descending into the depths, the space, all white in its plain simplicity, was bathed in light coming from an opening high above – even though it was raining heavily. Visitors were immersed in a luminous depth, as if invited to place their work in the light.
